Advisory Board Vacancies: The deadline is quickly approaching for those interested in applying for an advisory board within the City of Corvallis. The annual recruitment process for vacant advisory boards will end on June 4.

Boards with open positions include the Budget Commission and Urban Renewal Agency Budget Commission, the Climate Action Policy Advisory Board, and Community Police Review Policy Advisory Board.

Volunteers must reside within the City of Corvallis or be employed or self-employed full-time in city limits. Some advisory groups have additional qualifications, which are specified within each of the applications.

The advisory committees provide input and advice from the public through a network of policy advisory boards and task forces, operational committees and work groups, and commissions.

In a release from the city, participants are typically community members interested in making an impact on a particular policy topic or area of service.

Time commitments vary, from policy boards that meet monthly on long-term policy topics, to short-term task forces that work regularly for a few months on a specific issue and then conclude their work.

Wildfire Preparedness Month: The Benton County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation at the May 16 meeting proclaiming May as Wildfire Preparedness Month in Benton County.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office – Emergency Management Division will be partnering with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, private, and volunteer agencies to inform individuals on how to take action, through a series of public education campaigns and community exercises.

The proclamation states, the threat of wildfires greatly impacts our entire region including the residents of Benton County, Oregon and the impact of climate change has greatly increased the risk of wildfires in Oregon. When individuals take responsibility for preparing their families and their communities, the chance of survival and return to normalcy following a disaster is greatly increased.

Benton County Emergency Management and Benton County Emergency Operations Center staff will continue to participate in monthly training and exercises and planning activities to garner community involvement ahead of the wildfire season.

Joint Meeting: Corvallis City Council members Paul Shaffer and Tracey Yee along with members of city staff will be hosting a joint meeting tonight, Monday, May 22.

The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm and will be held at the Walnut Community Room located at 4950 NW Fair Oaks Drive. The meeting is open to anyone in the public who wishes to attend and ask questions about local government.
