City Mulls Equity, Diversity Boards: At their April 3 meeting, councilors will consider new plans to focus the city’s equity efforts – the recommendations come from the city’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force.
The council had already voted to move ahead, which meant further review, which is now complete. All that’s left to do is vote on a resolution to accept, and changes will start happening.
“The council voted to move forward with the recommendations from the DEI Task Force at its February 6th meeting earlier this year. The recommendations include disbanding the Community Involvement & Diversity Advisory Board, the King Legacy Advisory Board, and the DEI Task Force itself, and then creating a new Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Advisory Board as a focused forum for community engagement around these important issues,” said City of Corvallis Public Information Officer Patrick Rollens.
If the resolution is approved by council, the city will begin the process of recruiting members of the new JEDI board and working with the council liaison member on a launch plan for the board.
The city currently has two volunteer driven boards dedicated to issues revolving around diversity, equality and inclusion in Corvallis. The first is the King Legacy Advisory Board which aims to celebrate and promotes the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the goal of helping Corvallis to become a more inclusive and just community. The second is the Community Involvement and Diversity Advisory Board which works to increase opportunities for participation throughout the city.
